About Venetian Plaster

What Is Venetian Plaster?

Venetian plaster is a refined, hand-applied lime-based wall finish with roots in Italian Renaissance craftsmanship. It consists of multiple thin layers of natural lime plaster, each carefully applied and compressed to build depth, movement, and a distinctive luminous quality.

Unlike paint or wallpaper, Venetian plaster creates a surface with genuine three-dimensional depth. Light interacts differently across the surface depending on angle and intensity, producing a living quality that changes throughout the day. The result is an architectural statement that cannot be replicated by any other method.

At Atelier di Venice, each Venetian plaster surface is finished with meticulous attention to alignment, light reflection, and edge definition. This is craftsmanship supported by a system.

Common Questions

Venetian Plaster FAQs

What is Venetian plaster?

Venetian plaster is a hand-applied lime-based wall finish with roots in Italian Renaissance craftsmanship. It consists of multiple thin layers of plaster that are burnished to create depth, movement, and a distinctive polished appearance.

How is Venetian plaster different from microcement?

Venetian plaster is lime-based and typically applied to walls and ceilings for decorative effect. Microcement is cement-based and can be applied to floors, walls, and wet areas. Both are specialist applications requiring trained applicators.

How long does Venetian plaster last?

Venetian plaster is extremely durable when correctly applied. As a lime-based material, it naturally hardens over time through carbonation and can last decades with minimal maintenance.

Can Venetian plaster be used in bathrooms?

Yes, with appropriate sealing. Venetian plaster can be used in bathrooms away from direct shower spray. For wet areas, we recommend microcement instead.

What colours are available for Venetian plaster?

Venetian plaster can be tinted to virtually any colour. Pigments are mixed directly into the lime base, producing rich, natural tones that age beautifully.
